Brief Overview: Serge L’Homme

Early Life and Education:

Although born in Martinique and primarily resided in Guadeloupe, Serge L’Homme comes from a family deeply rooted in Dominica’s culture and traditions. The youngest of nine siblings, he was the only one not born in Dominica. His father, Coxon L’Homme, who hailed from Castle Bruce and had roots from Kalinago Territory, sold woven baskets in the Martinique market — he was a trader, huckster, and businessman. His mother, Antoinette Adin, also known as Ma L’Homme, was of East Indian descent, born in Martinique, and worked as a huckster in Guadeloupe. She frequently traveled to Dominica to source and sell produce. Eventually, his mother became more sedentary in Guadeloupe where she started selling spices and different esoteric products. Therefore, Mr. L’Homme’s journey began in his childhood, when his mother introduced him to the world of spices. These early experiences cultivated in him a profound appreciation for spices, which later led to substantial investments and diversity in the field. Mr. L’Homme’s academic journey took him abroad for 5 years, to France, Europe, where he predominantly traveled and explored his interest in Human Psychology. At 16, Mr. L’Homme was brought to Germany where he stayed for 6 months; he learned the German language and eventually joined the French Army.

Career

Serge L’Homme returned to St. Maarten, where he spent 16 years working as both a huckster and a truck operator. During this time, his mother reintroduced him to spices, teaching him to master nine distinct varieties. Mr. L’Homme then began selling spices at the local market in St. Maarten. His growing passion and knowledge for spices earned him the reputation of the “Spice Man”. Despite this, Serge felt a strong pullback to Dominica. He saw the potential for economic growth on the island and was determined to apply his knowledge and skills to contribute to its development. In 2003, he returned to Dominica and established L’Homme Business Heritage Group.

Community Engagement, Philanthropy and Impact:

Serge L’Homme is deeply committed to giving back to the community. Through L’Homme Business Heritage Group, he has initiated and supported numerous community-based projects aimed at improving the quality of life for Dominicans as well as boosting Dominica’s economy and reputation.

Community Outreach Activities

At L’Homme Business Heritage Group, we believe in the power of community and the importance of giving back. Therefore, our community outreach activities are designed to make a positive impact by supporting local initiatives and fostering strong, meaningful relationships within the neighborhoods we serve. Our last community outreach activity, held in 2017 after the passage of Hurricane Maria, focused on the students of Atkinson Primary School. These students were temporarily attending classes at the Salybia Primary School after Hurricane Maria damaged their school building. LBHG provided these students with clothes, school supplies, and additional items that may assist in their academic endeavors. While our establishment has not been as actively engaged in community outreach recently as we would like, we are committed to resuming and enhancing our efforts. According to our owner, Serge L’Homme, our primary focus is on leveraging Dominica’s natural resources to generate wealth that benefits both the island and its residents. Through the L’Homme Family Farms initiative, we plan to deepen our involvement in non-profit activities, with a strong commitment to giving back to the community. Our goal is to substantially contribute to local development and well-being through a renewed emphasis on impactful outreach.

Resource Utilization:

At L’Homme Business Heritage Group, our approach to resource utilization is grounded in the principle of harnessing Dominica’s natural resources responsibly and sustainably. This approach supports local agriculture and provides economic opportunities for the community. Additionally, we explore and implement innovative techniques to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of resource use. From developing specialty syrups and vinegars to producing exotic rums, our initiatives reflect a commitment to quality and sustainability.
